Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Gi vs Kimonos

I just got a Question in about the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu uniforms.

: What is the difference between a Gi and a Kimono?

Gi or Kimono

Its very simple. In Brazilian jiu-jitsu, the uniform is more often called a Gi. But Portuguese speaking countries still refer to it as a kimono. Gi or Kimono it is all the same thing to me.

Kimono is a traditional Japanese garment  The word “kimono” means a “thing to wear”. Kind of funny I think. I hope this answered you question.

  1. Hi David. That’s pretty interesting and I guess no question is a bad question. I wouldn’t have known a Gi and a Kimono were the same thing.

I noticed in the picture that the Kimono was full blue. The belt was black which I have some understanding of. My question is does the blue colored Kimono or Gi have symbolism as well?

    Thanks for the info. Geoff.

The color of the gi / kimono is truly the choice of the person wearing it. Some might like blue others like pink. Or even a black top with yellow pants. On mine I have patches from where I have fought and the team I am on.

      Thank you for you question
